AI Is Moving Fast. Can Your Safeguards Keep Up?
The Finance Minister and the RBI are asking the same question: can you see and control every AI interaction in real time, not review it weeks later?
A double-edged sword
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had a clear message at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai this month.
AI is a double edged sword.
The same tools helping banks catch fraud faster are also helping attackers build bigger, more sophisticated cyberattacks.
She went further. Without proper safeguards, she said, the risk of AI "going rogue" cannot be left for society to sort out afterwards. That approach is unsustainable. Responsibility has to sit with humans and institutions, not be handed off to the technology.
What the Finance Minister actually asked for
Her ask was specific: built in checks, human oversight, and circuit breakers that protect the system. Safeguards that evolve as fast as the technology does, not once a year during an audit.
She also flagged agentic AI. Systems that don't just answer questions but take actions and complete tasks on their own, with limited human involvement.
The RBI is asking the same thing
This isn't a new idea from the RBI either. Its FREE AI framework (Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of AI) already asks for the same things: performance monitoring, drift detection that can trigger a rollback, kill switch capability, and mandatory human sign off on high stakes decisions like credit and claims.
The real question
The real question both the Finance Minister and the RBI are asking isn't whether employees will use AI. They already are.
The real question is whether you can see and control every AI interaction in real time, not review it weeks later in an audit.
